Following the success of Gladiatora follow-up was put in development with writer John Logan again working on the screenplay.
That film would reportedly follow Lucius as he tried to find out about his past. One idea was exploring the afterlife, while another idea had the sequel moving back and forth through time, showing Crowe in flashbacks. Producer Walter F. Russell is exploring some ideas on how to come back. We can go backwards in time and forward. Rome has become a fascist state and we have a prince who needs to find out who was his father.
The idea that Cave came up with was truly bonkers, and his script was later revealed online, according to The Guardian. The script also included mock naval battles, a theater flooded with alligators, and a big showdown fight.
The climax of the film would reveal Maximus going into battle in Ancient Rome, then transported through the centuries as a reincarnated? The point being that the origins of war in the past have continued to cycle in the future. So yeah, a pretty bonkers sequel.

See All.It has been almost 20 years since Ridley Scott unleashed his epic swords and sandals classic Gladiator on an unsuspecting world. Good question, and at the moment one fans can only speculate on, since the first Gladiator film has an ending which seems to rule out a sequel. Given the success it brought him, it seems likely Russell Crowe would be willing to return if the script was good enough, even if it was just in a cameo role. While he took charge of the much maligned Alien prequels, Prometheus and Covenant, Scott stepped back to being a producer on Blade Runnerwhich proved a shrewd choice.
So while it is hard to imagine him letting anyone else handle the follow up to one of his biggest films, it would not be unprecedented and might, in fact, be a good idea.
The producers have said that Scott is on board, so whether directing or not he will have a string hand in shaping how the final film turns out.
That said, Scott is renowned as a master craftsman who can work at pace, so if he does take charge of this, expect to see it in cinemas some time before Sign in Edit Account Sign Out.

Between the epic nature of the story and the film concluding with Maximus Russell Crowe dying, the instinctive response from audiences wasn't to ask for a sequel. Things have changed over the past two decades, as Scott has begun working on a follow-up film, which is being written by Peter Craig. The upcoming sequel's producers confirmed that the new film would take place roughly 25 years after the original. News of a sequel moving forward nearly two decades after the original film's release might sound shocking, but that's far from strange for Scott.
While many sequels to his Alien were made over the years, Scott himself didn't return to the franchise until with Prometheuswhich he followed with Alien: Covenant. Between the amount of time that has passed since Gladiator 's release and with the main character having died, audiences have assumed a new film wouldn't focus on Maximus, but Scott teased in that he found a way to revive the character. Despite the lack of details about the project, we can't help but hope Scott will utilize some of the ideas Australian musician Nick Cave toyed with when Crowe asked him to write the script years ago.
He becomes this eternal warrior and it ends with this minute war scene which follows all the wars in history, right up to Vietnam and all that sort of stuff and it was wild. It was a stone cold masterpiece. I enjoyed writing it very much because I knew on every level that it was never going to get made.

At the film's conclusion, Maximus gets his revenge in a one-on-one gladiator duel with Commodus, whom he kills before succumbing to his own wounds. He then joins his murdered wife and son in the afterlife in a tear-jerking finale that decidedly did not appear to be setting up a continuation of the story.
Fans want to know: how will Scott and Craig follow up their epic picture, are any of the original cast members returning, and when can we feast our eyes on the unexpected sequel to one of the best pictures of its decade? Scott famously likes to keep busy, but he's just as famously a master craftsman who remains in high gear for the duration of any project he takes on.
All of his features are currently in the scripting phase, so when it comes to which he'll tackle first, it may just be a question of which will be the first one completed.
As of now, there's been no word on who Scott and the film's producers are eyeing for Gladiator 2 's cast, but the burning question on fans' minds is whether Russell Crowe will return in any capacity. One scrapped screenplay for the film which, oddly enough, was penned by musician Nick Cave saw Maximus resurrected as a Christian soldier. That project would have featured Crowe as Maximus briefly spending some time in the afterlife before being shuffled back onto the mortal coil where he presumably would have been played by a different actor.
Although Craig is starting from scratch for Gladiator 2 's story, this early draft at least illustrates one way in which Crowe might possibly make an appearance. Another would be through the use of flashbacks — although it's worth noting that Crowe is now 20 years older than he was when the first film was shot.
Having said that, many recent blockbusters particularly the films of Marvel Studios have shown that this is no longer the issue it once was, as the art of using CGI to digitally de-age actors has pretty much been perfected. It remains to be seen whether the film's plot will require an appearance by Maximus, and when it comes to that, we have only the scantest details.
When the project was announced, Deadline reported that Gladiator 2 will shift focus away from Maximus to follow the story of Lucius, the nephew of Commodus, as an adult. In the original film, Lucius was a boy of perhaps 10, who came under threat from Commodus when his mother Lucilla Connie Nielsen displayed opposition to her brother's corruption. Fans will remember that young Lucius, who was portrayed by Spencer Treat Clark, was present for the final battle between Maximus and Commodus — and it's safe to say that the fight's outcome would have had a profound effect on the boy.
Gladiator 2 Producers Reveals When the Sequel Takes Place
It's also not known whether Clark will reprise his role, although recent precedent suggests that it's not out of the question; the actor also appeared as a child in M. The time period setting of Gladiator 2 is one detail that actually has been made public at this early stage. After the project's announcement, producer Walter F.
He then continued, "It picks up the story 30 years later So, there you have it: Gladiator 2 will take place 25 to 30 years after the events of the original, which lends credence to the report that an adult Lucius will be at the center of the story. Interestingly, as pointed out by A.
If Scott decides to take on another of his plethora of feature film projects first, it could be significantly later than that. For the time being, we'll just have to wait to see how it all plays out.
