American Joe Schemansky set to work on the HR facelift as styling director but a tribe of the new GMH young guns were set loose on developing other new Holdens. It was the first real Australian 'sports car' although Ford had beaten Holden to the punch with already offering a V8 in a sporty version of it's four-door Falcon called the GT.

Some experts consider the Monaro to have been the most important car in the history of the Holden V8 even though it was sourced from the U. Holden when releasing the Monaro sent out the clear intention to Ford that not only was it going out there to be competitive, but it was going out there to win races and this it did at it's first meeting. The feirce rivalry between Ford and Holden off the track was sparked with both marques having moved into the 'muscle car' market with products that were the same as what the public saw on the race track.

Bathurst was seen as the perfect marketing tool for these new muscle cars as the the race was for production cars and the cars on track were virtualy the same as you could buy in the showroom of your local dealer.

If a car won on Sunday it sold on Monday and both GM-H and Ford wanted to cash in the perception that the cars were identical to the race cars. Holden's stylists had already come up with the HK series and it had about as much grace as a worn old sandshoe. To expect, and indeed introduce the coupe from this model was a huge challenge for the new group of stylists.

The original production Monaro coupe roofline was so striking that even the blunt HK front looked like it belonged to something that actuatually moved. The new coupe had such an impact on Holdens of the day because the HK four door sedan looked so ordinary.

John Schinella, a young American stylist rapidly shot up Holden's ranks to become assistant to Schemansky, is credited for much of the inspiration in the first Monaro.

Ted Schroder, another American import is also acknowledged for the finer points of the Monaro style. Interior designer Marjorie Schroder, wife of Ted, added the stitch patterns, inserts, centre consoles and other trm choices that were far superior to the HR series Holden. The alien invasion as the stylists were known as had strong links to Oldsmobile. The HK Monaro shared the Oldsmobile Tornado's same rear pillar design that blended seemlessly into the rear quarter panels.

The rear wheel arch blisters and the almost constant slope from rear windows to boot were also Tornado features that were incororated into the Monaro. The pillarless sweep of the rear side windows can be seen in the Oldsmobile Cutlass Holiday hardtop. Schroder and Schinella's details included the first Aussie designed full wheel covers with all the elaborite badge work and blackouts of the day. The stainless steel covers tended to come loose at the slightest bump and cut the fingers when cleaning but they looked the goods.

Paint filled wheel arch accents, grille and tail panel blackouts and the loud GTS striping brougt even the base model Monaro six cylinder to life. There were no less than 19 Monaro engine and transmission combinations ranging fronm the ci Aussie red six to three on the tree to the classic Chevrolet powered ci V8 Bathurst Monaro with four on the floor. Given the limitations of standard drum brakes and handling, the feeble entry level was as relevant to many Holden buyers as the most powerful V8 models.

The Monaro shared the same inch wheelbase as the sedan that was lengthened to match the XR Falcon. It was always a big car and remained a different concept from the chopped wheelbase of the Valliant Charger.

The first run of the Holden Monaro was one of the shortest in Holden history and explains why such unusual option mixes are hard to find. Not long after the first Monaros hit the streets, the GTS began to be hurled around Australian racetracks with sensational success. Named for its 5. The following year, Monaro again proved its mettle, with Colin Bond and Tony Roberts claiming victory and the young Peter Brock, also driving a Monaro, finishing third.

The Mount Panorama circuit proved a fitting battleground for the fastback coupe named after an Aboriginal word meaning 'high plateau' or 'high place'. The popularity of the Monaro remained high throughout its model life and its legions of admirers keep theflame burning bright. Over the Easter break ,more than 10, enthusiasts turned up over four days for the "Monaros in the Millennim bash at Wangaratta, Victoria.

It is headquartered in Port Melbourne.

The company was founded in as a saddlery manufacturer in South Australia. Init moved into the automotive field and even built the Ford Model T for a period before later becoming a subsidiary of the United States-based General Motors GM inwhen the company was renamed General Motors-Holden's Ltd.

Holden also distributed the European Opel brand in Australia in until its Australian demise in mid Holden briefly owned assembly plants in New Zealand during the early s. The plants had belonged to General Motors from until in an earlier and quite separate operation from GM's Holden investment in Australia. From toall Australian-built Holden vehicles were manufactured in Elizabeth, South Australia, and engines were produced at the Fishermans Bend plant in Melbourne.

Historically, production or assembly plants were operated in all mainland states of Australia. The consolidation of final assembly at Elizabeth was completed inbut some assembly operations continued at Dandenong until Although Holden's involvement in exports has fluctuated since the s, the declining sales of large cars in Australia led the company to look to international markets to increase profitability.

FromHolden incurred losses due to the strong Australian dollar, and reductions of government grants and subsidies. Frost joined the business as a junior partner and J.

The last of this line of business was the assembly of Hillman Minx sedans in Ford's proposal was the government's first choice, but required substantial financial assistance.

GM's study was ultimately chosen because of its low level of government intervention. From here, Holden continued to pursue the goal of producing an Australian car. This involved compromise with GM, as Holden's managing director, Laurence Hartnettfavoured development of a local design, while GM preferred to see an American design as the basis for "Australia's Own Car". During the s, Holden dominated the Australian car market.

GM invested heavily in production capacity, which allowed the company to meet increased postwar demand for motor cars. Production of both the utility and sedan continued with minor changes untilwhen they were replaced by the facelifted FJ model, introducing a third panel van body style.

Over time, it gained iconic status and remains one of Australia's most recognisable automotive symbols. Holden's next model, the FElaunched inoffered in a new station wagon body style dubbed "Station Sedan" in the company's sales literature. The opening of the Dandenong, Victoriaproduction facility in brought further jobs; byHolden employed 19, workers country-wide.

InHolden introduced its third major new model, the FB. The car's style was inspired by s Chevrolets, with tailfins and a wrap-around windscreen with "dog leg" A-pillars. By the time it was introduced, many considered the appearance dated.

Much of the motoring industry at the time noted that the adopted style did not translate well to the more compact Holden. InFord unveiled the new Falcon in Australia, only months after its introduction in the United States. To Holden's advantage, the Falcon was not durable, particularly in the front suspension, making it ill-suited for Australian conditions. More significantly, the HR fitted standard front seat belts; Holden thus became the first Australian automaker to provide the safety device as standard equipment across all models. No other car company has shaped Australia in so many ways, for so long.

Established as a saddle maker inHolden has come a long way. The fifties were defined by beautiful design, bringing the good-looking, affordable FX to Australians. Production was booming and by the end of the decade, overHolden's were produced.

By this time, Holden outsold the nearest competitor by two to one. The EK followed and gave thousands of Australians their first automatic experience. Holden was on a roll and inthe EH launched and became the fastest selling Australian car. Output had doubled since The car was the first full-sized model to include the Australian-built, Trimatic automatic transmission. This smaller, lighter model was the legendary first of the model series spanning 30 years.

The '70s brought Holden legendary status. The first Torana model appeared in the late '60s, however it was really a true icon of the '70s. Claiming motorsport success, the Torana became one of the most respected vehicles in the Australian car scene. In the Gemini was launched. The '80s were a time of evolution and new ventures for Holden. Bythe four-millionth Holden was sold, and the first 4WD vehicle was launched, the Holden Jackaroo.

The JB Camira marked another first, as Holden made its foray into front wheel drive. The VR Commodore was the most technically savvy to date, with more safety features than any other car in the family bracket. Exports of the Family II four-cylinder reached the three-million mark by At the turn of the millennium, Holden put its efforts into refining existing technologies.

The VE Commodore followed, representing the fourth generation of Australia's best-selling car range and winning the Wheels Car of the Year and Australian Design Awards for its performance, refinement, fit and finish. Today, Holden continues to push boundaries and stay at the cutting edge of technology. The VF Commodore range, launched inbecame one of the most advanced vehicles to wear the Holden badge.

Lighter, smarter and more streamlined, it contained a vast array of integrated high technology features, combined with its renowned performance prowess. The model line-up has included the stunning Astra, Cascada and Insignia, with super sharp looks and performance to match.

Now celebrating over 60 years of heritage, Holden has become an integral part of Australia. Our next chapter has already begun — stay tuned to see what the future will hold! A bold history of looking ahead.

Our history is iconic, our future is exciting. Now that General Motors has decided to scrap the Holden brand, the question being asked by many is whether they are a good collectors-item investment or a money pit which will soon be worthless.

Some classic old Holdens, made when Peter Brock was a Bathurst fixture, can now command six-figure sums. Surprisingly, however, the Holdens fetching the highest prices on carsales. Classic old Holdens made during the era when Peter Brock was a Bathurst fixture are now selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Forgettable Holdens built from the s onwards don't fetch that much - with Camiras hardly deemed desirable as a locally-made version of GM's unloved global J-car. Leo Pruneau, Holden's chief designer during the s and s, said he particularly disliked the Gemini, an Isuzu model from Japan that was made in Australia. Conversely, Mr Pruneau said homegrown Holdens with a V8 engine were particularly loved. A Holden with a GTS badge is worth a lot, whether it has six or eight cylinders.

For the same price, it is possible to buy a modified HQ Kingswood with ,km. Holdens derived from the Kingswood and Torana, built before unleaded petrol was introduced, are commanding more than Commodores built during the s onwards.

The auction benchmark was set two months after the last Australian-made Holden, a VF-series Commodore, rolled off the production line at Elizabeth, in Adelaide's north. General Motors announced on Monday that the Holden brand will be killed off inending a motoring legacy that began in November with the first model.

Forgettable Holdens built from the s onwards don't fetch that much - with Camiras hardly sought after. During the late s and s, the Toyota Camry was rebadged and sold as a Holden Apollo.
