Unfortunately, these are pretty common problems that many homeowners or apartment dwellers might face eventually, especially with electric water heaters and water heater reset switches. If the button is lit up, it means the switch tripped and needs to be reset.
There may also be a lower thermostat reset button on the water heater. If so, push that reset button as well.
One of the main causes for the reset switch to trip is because the water heater is actually letting the water get too hot. This is probably an indication of a faulty thermostat in either the upper or lower heating element. The way a water heater works is pretty simple. Water in the pressurized tank fills from the bottom up and heats from the bottom up as well. Fresh water fills at the bottom and the lower heating element heats that water.
As the water fills to the top, the upper heating element keeps the water hot. Each section has its own heating element and thermostat. These thermostats control the heating elements in the water heater. As the water sits in the tank, it will start to cool off. The thermostats kick in to reheat the water. Once the water heats to the temperature set on the high-limit switch, the thermostats shut off. With a faulty high-limit thermostat, the element will keep heating the water above the set temperature and the high-limit switch will trip.
The high-limit thermostat should be set at a temperature that gives you nice, hot water, but not boiling water that can burn or scald you. Your tap water should never come out as hot as boiling water. Once you set the thermostat, the water should never heat above that set temperature.Truma combi. - Truma combi heater quick start guide for heating and hot water
If your circuit breaker trips and needs to be reset, the water heater stops getting electricity to run. We have replaced the element in our mor flo hot water heater and the reset button. It is getting power to all termnals. How long should we wait for the water to heat back up. This can depend on the building size. Most apartments stories will have an individual water heater for each apartment. Some larger complexes will use large commercial water heaters or boilers to serve the entire building.
The reset button is part of the thermostat so you will need to replace the entire part. I have replaced the reset buttons and thermostat and still have to hit the reset button to get hot water is it time for a new hot water tank thankyou. A lot of time it depends how old your water heater is before sinking more money into it.
The culprit could also be a bad heating element or loose wiring which is causing the high-limit switch to trip. Could this trip the reset button? New elements last month. Worked fine till yesterday. Community Question: Do you have any required travel accessories to suggest for caravanners?
Previous Next. Oct 3, 26 0 0. Hi everyone Just joined the foruma dn hoping some of you can shed some light on an issue weve started to have with the water pump. Weve an Elddis Elusion 4 Berth - everything was okay first trip at the weekend then the pump suddenly stopped working yesterday morning.
A lot to get used to we had a quick once over from the previous owners when we bought it back in August. No hard copy of the manual with it either - I emailed Elddis and they sent me a PDF from so I'm assuming that manual is still ok for our van. Ive read a few forums and this seems common that pumps can go - I'm worried that the pump run indicator isnt illuminating.
Ive ordered a water heater fuse for it waiting on it coming. Just in case its went as well. Worried what the labour charges might be - its not an Elddis dealer just a general caravan dealer. Could it be that if the pump is gone then the switch inside wont work at all - and nothing will register? There's nothing at all when turning on the pump switch?
I think we have microswitches on the taps and they are "clicking" when turned on as far as I can hear. Ive read you can run a 12v battery across the pump terminals to check it works. Any help really appreciated as I'm stumped right now. Mar 14, 13, 40, Hello elusion1, First of all welcome to the forum, and I hope that we can help. Let me assure you that as you have had hot water then that at least means the heater is fine.I am seeking advise on what could be the possible issue or repairer in Sydney.
Hi Treecrest Have checked the AC powerpoint and it is on and working properly. Checked with another appliance. Hello FraLyn I am not an electrician and my model may not be the same as yours You mention that you do not have a switch to switch from gas to VAC Ours is a model Truma B 14 In the picture below The lower switch is for the gas operation with three positions 70 degrees, off, or 60 degrees The upper switch is for the volt, which can be either on, or off My model owners manual does say Quote The electrical heating element is fitted with an excess temperature cut-out.
In event of a fault, switch off at the control panel, wait 5 minutes, then switch on again. Unquote When the fault is rectified, can you please let us all know what went wrong, as your problem may happen to someone else. We have just returned home after 3 mths on the road. The Truma HWS was high on the list. One motorhome owner has had to replace his three times because of split seams, resulting in a wet MH. Apparently the manufacturers know the problem and are endeavoring to fix it.
The problem is expansion when hot and contraction when cold of the water cylinder. The problem is reduced if the temperature constant. HWS comes on when connected to AC. The system was now functioning normally without any changes being made to the HWS. So either the AC plug was not fully plugged in or after disconnecting the gas and the AC the system reset itself - a mystery to me - at the same time looking a bit foolish.
So not sure what resolved the issue. Thank you for your responses. Aussie Paul. Click here to visit the Grey Nomads website. The hot water heater reset is actually a high limit safety thermostat switch that disconnects the power to the water heater if the water exceeds a preset temperature.
The temperature sensing button of the reset is in direct contact with the metal tank and senses water temperature through conduction.
Although the reset may be defective, when the reset trips out repeatedly, it is usually an indication of a more serious problem. A thermostat that is stuck closed may be the cause of the reset button tripping repeatedly. A thermostat that does not open allows the element to operate continuously, thus raising the temperature of the tank water to a dangerously high level. A simple continuity reading through the thermostat using a digital multimeter will confirm this as being the problem.
Turn off the power to the water heater at the service panel and disconnect the wires from the thermostat. A heating element shorted to ground will also cause your heating element to run continuously and trip out the reset button.
Check for a shorted element by disconnecting one of the wires and taking a continuity reading from the terminals on the element and the tank. Replace the element. Based in Colorado Springs, Colo.
